Acne is a skin condition that occurs when pores are clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Acne appears in different forms of skin blemishes each with their specific appearances and symptoms.
Non-inflammatory Acne Types: Blackheads & Whiteheads
Blackheads are open comedonal acne which results from sebum clogging up the inside of our pores and the surface oxidizing due to the air. When the melanin pigment in the sebum oxidizes, it turns dark. On the other hand, whiteheads are small, closed comedones that look white or flesh-colored.
Inflammatory Acne Types: Papules, Pustules, Nodules & Cysts
Papules are inflamed blemishes that occur when the clogging of dead skin cells inside the pore causes hair follicles to swell. They appear as red bumps on the skin. When papules accumulate pus, they become pustules (pimples). They appear as inflamed, red lesions containing white or yellow pus.
Nodular acne is a large and inflamed bump that forms when the swelling of clogged pores increases. Nodules are usually painful to touch as they are located deep within the skin. Nodular acne should be treated by a dermatologist. Cystic acne appears softer than nodules but similar in size and inflammation. Cysts are located deeper within the skin than nodules, creating a large pus-filled bump. If left untreated, it will leave a scar on your skin. Cystic acne should be also be treated by a dermatologist.
What Causes Acne?
Acne appears when the pores of the skin are blocked. This blockage is caused by excess sebum produced by the sebaceous glands found near the skin’s surface. Sebaceous glands lubricate the skin with sebum to prevent it from drying out. When excessive sebum is produced, it combines with dead skin cells and bacteria to form a “plug” in follicular pores.
Several factors that contribute to acne breakouts:
Acne can be hereditary based on specific genetic influences and environmental factors. Genetic tendencies in some families may have production levels of sebum excretion and dead skin cells that are different from the healthy average production, leading to frequent acne breakouts.
During puberty, adolescents are prone to acne due to hormonal changes. These changes subsequently increase sebum production more than adults. Adults, especially women, experience acne issues due to hormonal changes linked to the menstrual cycle, menopause and pregnancy.
Incompatible Skin Care Products
To choose skin care products that are suitable with your skin type, look out for non-comedogenic and fragrance-free products. Incompatible skin care products may worsen your skin condition when triggered by certain product ingredients. Every skin has different needs and sensitivity levels.
Pulling an all-nighter or experiencing constant insomnia deprives your body the sufficient rest it needs. Acne can be a sign of sleep deprivation when your hormones are disrupted, which triggers an unhealthy chemical imbalance in the body. It is recommended to sleep 7 to 8 hours per night.
